The Talich Quartet also gives moving performances [HA26]on a currently unavailable Calliope CD, which has just been re-released on La Dolce Volta 256.
In any case there are some 50 versions of the two quartets, often paired on the same CD, from every string quartet worth its salt. The music is so good, that they rarely get less than the best from the Quartets that tackle it.

[ jfl2] [ jfl2]The Second Quartet was originally written with the viola d’amore in mind. The Mandelring Quartet (Audite 92545) not only offers two superb modern readings of the quartets in conventional form, but also in its very subtly different, ambient version with that delicate instrument the distinguishing features of which is its set of ‘‘sympathetic strings’’.
(I’m not sure about writing ‘‘oh, just grab any ol’ copy’’. Kind of goes against the very grain of much of this book. Instead something like this: Panocha Quartet (Supraphon 3906) and Pavel Haas Quartet (Suprao-hon 3877 & 3922, coupled with the ummissable quartets of the group’s namesake) are among the easiest recommendations.)
